The Snow Club

The Club was formed:

To help Racers to progress from plastic onto snow!

To progress racers from grass roots level to national squads

The Snow Club was originally formed to help regional racers, who normally

skied and raced on plastic slopes in this country, to train and race on snow

with coaches they knew.

The Snow Club aims to promote and support the skier’s home club. This

means the racer competes for their home club when racing on snow with the

Snow Club as their 2nd club.

The club works with qualified coaches and is concerned to look after ‘the new

racer’ as well as FIS license holders.

Although a small club, with relatively few members, we have been in

existence since 1990, and have had a very distinguished start with a

number of British and English champions. For 3 years, we were been the

holders of the 3rd best placed BARSC club at the BARSC championships which

is a tremendous achievement considering that we are one of the smaller clubs.

Each year ‘our’ children are invited to compete abroad as members of the British

Children’s squad. Our members are regularly invited to be members of the English

Alpine Squad. Currently there are racers who are either current or past members of

The Snow Club in the English Alpine Squad. The Snow Club does not just focus on

its top performers but also takes a lot of time and care over preparing the newcomer

to snow racing. It is a central part of our training to instill good technical foundations

in our skiers. Obviously, this makes the training camps beneficial to skiers just wishing

to improve their general technique and we have skiers at every training camp who just

do this. At each Summer Training Camp, The Club concentrates on the ‘younger’ age

group with special development groups, designed to help the inexperienced

racer while keeping the process fun.

If requested, our Coaches will produce a written report for the home club

Coaches in order to keep them informed of 'their' racers progress while away

on snow. The Racer will need to tell us where to send the report.

Should any Club Coach wish to attend a training camp, we would be very

pleased for them to take part. Over the years, many of the region's Coaches

have participated in running Snow Club Camps. We always encourage Clubs

to join in.

BASIC SNOW CLUB PROGRAMME

INTRODUCTORY LEVEL:

Young skiers entering into race training for the first time will do much of their

initial work outside the poles. The younger skiers will ski mostly GS or

enlarged slalom courses as an introduction but our main emphasis is on

keeping it fun and working on the basic skills required in game and task

formats.

RELEVANT RACES:

At this stage, we select the easier and more relaxed events (minis races and

club races)

DEVELOPMENT LEVEL:

As the skier grows in experience, then it is necessary to run more slalom

courses but the main technical thrust is still towards GS as this is the most

technical discipline and we believe it builds the skill required for success in the

other disciplines. Emphasis now is on checking fitness, technical elements

and building speed safely.

RELEVANT RACES:

Most of the bass seeded races are now suitable and we try to select a full

range such as the BARSC championships, British school girls invitation races,

British school boy’s races, the British + English championships.

INDEPENDENT RACER

Many independent racers use our training facility and expertise to help to

prepare them for individual events and also as part of a full training

programme. As stated before, we also can help FIS standard racers with their

individual race programme.

SUMMER TRAINING CAMP 1 to 3 WEEKS

Training will be for all standards and is arranged in small groups. You can

stay with the group for one, two or three weeks. Skiing will take place in the

morning with a full programme of sport, including jogging, in the afternoon.

OCTOBER HALF TERM CAMP

Training will again be for all standards in groups of similar skiing ability. This

camp will get you ready for the races around Christmas and New Year.

CHRISTMAS/NEW YEAR RACING CAMP

Few days training before ONE OR TWO club races followed by the BARSC

Championships.

FEBRUARY HALF TERM TRANING CAMP

A training camp for general skiing skill aimed at the young racers.

EASTER TRAINING AND RACING CAMP

This camp will look after 'our' racers before and during the British

junior/children championships and the English alpine championships.

BRITISH SCHOOL GIRLS/BOYS RACES - usually at the end of

JANUARY/beginning of FEBRUARY

We aim to have one team entered in each of these race series.

RACING IN SCOTLAND

When requested, one of our trainers will take racers up to Scotland for

selected race weekends - (usually excellent for getting 'good' seed points).
